To ensure the transfer of wastewater generated in some settlements of the Absheron Peninsula to the Pirshaghi wastewater treatment plant, the construction of carrier sewers has been started. “Azersu” OJSC is currently constructing a collector in two directions. According to the project, collectors are being built in two directions: Zabrat-Kurdakhani-Pirshaghi, as well as along the coast. 40% of the work on the construction of a 4 km long collector with 1400 mm diameter reinforced concrete pipes for the purpose of collecting and transporting the waste water generated in Zabrat, Kurdakhani and Pirshaghi settlements to the treatment plant has been completed. At present, a 2 km long tunnel is being constructed near the Pirshaghi station of the collector at the intersection of the railway and the highway. Construction of tunnels is carried out by special tunneling machines. For this purpose, pits dug at different depths at 16 points along the collector route are used. So far, a 400-meter-long tunnel has been built and work will be completed by the end of this year.

It should be noted that the Pirshaghi wastewater treatment plant, built under a joint project of the Azerbaijani government and the Export-Import Bank of Korea, will prevent the discharge of wastewater directly into the Caspian Sea in a large area in the north-eastern part of the Absheron Peninsula. Wastewater generated in some areas of Novkhani, Mehdiabad, Goradil, Fatmayi, Kurdakhani, Pirshaghi, Mohammadi, Digah, Zabrat, Mashtagha and Nardaran settlements will be treated and removed at the biological- type facility with a capacity of 40,000 cubic meters per day. In the future, the construction of additional collectors will be continued to transport wastewater generated in these settlements to the treatment plant.

In order to protect the ecological stability of the Caspian Sea, a 1,700-meter-long distribution line was built at the Pirshaghi wastewater treatment plant to ensure that the treated water is discharged into the relatively deep part of the sea.
