Standards

   Quality indicators of drinking water provided to consumers of the Republic of Azerbaijan are determined according to the International Standards (GOST 2874-82) accepted by CIS countries. Organoleptic, physical-chemical, microbiological, parasitological, radiological indicators of the drinking water are studied in accordance with the State Standards GOST 2874-82. At present water taken from sources is processed according to "Drinking Water" State Standards No7874-82 prior to convey to consumers. In future it is intended to apply international standards (World Health Organization and European Union) for identification of quality indicators of drinking water treated by “Azersu” OJSC. For this purpose Central Laboratory that meets all requirements put into operation in Baku. More than 50 parameters of drinking water are set under the standards adopted by the World Health Organization and more than 75 parameters by the European Union.

Quality monitoring

The quality of drinking water is periodically controlled at different stages starting from the source until it is transferred to the user. Water quality control begins with laboratory analyzes conducted in water sources. Drinking water is seriously analyzed by experts before being transmitted to the network and the results are registered in the Central Laboratory.Water samples are taken from different points- central reservoir, distribution reservoirs, schools, kindergartens, hospitals, and public catering objects and others. After applying Europe Standards number of points that water samples taken from will be 52. Epidemiological monitoring is fulfilled by Hygiene and Epidemiology centers of Ministry of Health in the centralized water supply system.

 When the results of the analysis of water samples are considered inadmissible, the corresponding department of Azersu JSC is informed and the supply of drinking water is suspended. Causes that damage to the quality of drinking water is eliminated and analysis of drinking water is carried out again. Only in the case of   positive results of analysis of drinking water is provided to consumers.

 

Wastewater Monitoring

      Presently, wastewater of Baku is treated in Hovsan, Sahil, Buzovna, Mardakan, Shuvalan and Zig Water Treatment Plants previous to discharge into the Caspian Sea. Laboratories are functioning for monitoring treatment process in each Water Treatment Plant. Physical-chemical and bacteriological parameters of treated waste water are determined according to 91/27 EES directive adopted by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the European Union. The following indicators are controlled during treatment process of wastewater.

Central Laboratory

A new building of the Central Laboratory of Azersu Open Joint Stock Company was inaugurated with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev on September 16, 2013. The building covering an area of 1800 square meters consists of drinking water and sewage sections. Each section has departments for microbiology, physical and chemical analyses. The laboratory is fitted with equipments manufactured by leading international companies of Germany, France, the USA, Japan, and other countries. The equipment enables determination of physical, chemical and bacteriological properties of drinking water and makes possible to conduct operative, accurate and reliable analyzes.

   With the help “ICP-MS” equipment installed in the most sophisticated laboratory of the region that allows the company to determine the exact amount of toxic and heavy metals, which is considered to be extremely dangerous for the human body, is precisely determined by the exact nano and peak accuracy. In this case, the solution is heated to 10,000 degrees Celsius, and then the plasma is exposed to the composition of the metals.

Newly-acquired high-precision fluid and gas chromatographic devices determine the residues of water used in agriculture and organic matter containing carcinogens. Anion and cations, which are considered harmful to human health, are analyzed by the ion-chromatographic device. The TOC contains carbon in the composition of organic substances.

   The microbiology analysis room of the laboratory is responsible for detecting dangerous bacteria and these analyzes are carried out in special biological cabinets.

   The sewage section of the laboratory conducts both physical and chemical analyses. Here, there is an opportunity to determine pollution levels in industrial enterprises, to monitor the quality of treated waste water, as well as the composition of water in the discharged basins.

   The new laboratory has also provided the opportunity for conducting analyses throughout the republic. To do that, 6 mobile laboratories have been purchased for the transportation of water samples. The field laboratories are currently conducting analyses of water samples taken in district centers and villages.

For the purpose of international accreditation of the Central Laboratory, employees of the Latvian State Accreditation Institution (LATAK) checked the compliance of the analysis carried out here with international standards and gave positive feedback.
